Amazon.com: 1977: Music: Ash   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Ash's 1977 opens with the cheesy roar of a Star Wars TIE-fighter (did they have to pay royalties to the Lucas empire for that audio clip?), launching itself into a high-octane, quick energy groove, where it happy sits for its entirety.
1977 subscribes to philosophies that have served rock and roll well over the years -- never learn four chords when three will do, and when you're playing the drums, hit them as hard as you can.
Not because of any musical deficiencies, but because the hidden track is a long and really nasty sound byte of one of the Ash band members being loudly and violently ill after a night of heavy partying.

XTC - Music Downloads - Online
Bio: XTC was one of the smartest -- and catchiest -- British pop bands to emerge from the punk and new wave explosion of the late '70s.
White Music, the band's first full-length album, was recorded in a week and released by the end of the year.
XTC's lack of commercial success isn't because their music isn't accessible -- their bright, occasionally melancholy, melodies flow with more grace than most bands -- it has more to do with the group constantly being out of step with the times.

Irvine, CA (February, 28, 1997) - A research team exploring the link between music and intelligence reports that music training - specifically piano instruction - is far superior to computer instruction in dramatically enhancing children's abstract reasoning skills necessary for learning math and science.
As a follow-up to their groundbreaking studies indicating how music can enhance spatial-reasoning ability, the researchers set out to compare the effects of musical and non-musical training on intellectual development.
Their studies indicate that music training generates the neural connections used for abstract reasoning, including those necessary for understanding mathematical concepts.

Written and recorded while a teenage Tim Wheeler was doing his A-levels, 1977 (named after the year Star Wars was released) made Ash bona-fide indie starlets overnight, largely thanks to the quality of the singles it contains.
It is unfortunately hindered by the trademark duvet production of Oasis man Owen Morris, which muffles Rick McMurrey's thunderous drums and does nothing for Wheeler's uniquely flat voice (one of the album's major shortcomings in itself).
Named after the year Star Wars was released, 1977 begins with the sounds of an X-wing fighter plane soaring off into space.

No.1 Pop Music Hits (1977) - Reviews on RateItAll   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Every generation should give testimony to what there was about a particular piece of music from their early recollection (vocals, lyrics, melody, beat, instrumentals, arrangements, recording, timing, etc.) that made a song popular.
We may find occasion to recall, rave, rage, rate and puzzle about the success of a song that made it to the top spot, but the numbers will not be denied.
Through 1955, the Number One position was taken almost exclusively by instrumentals and vocals of romantic standards and the like, until the Bill Haley and His Comets recording of (We're Gonna) Rock Around the Clock became the "dividing line between all that came before and all that followed" after 1955.
