Topic: 1977 in video gaming

History of computer and video games - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The game is loosely based around table tennis: ball is "served" from the center of the court and as the ball moves towards their side of the court each player must maneuver their bat to hit the ball back to their opponent.
While the fruit of development in early video games appeared mainly (for the consumer) in video arcades and home consoles, the rapidly evolving home computers of the 1970s and 80s allowed their owners to program simple games.
While other games would also make use of it, the FPS would become the chief driving force behind the development of new 3D hardware, as well as the yardstick by which its performance would be measured, usually quantified as the number of frames per second rendered for a particular scene in a particular game.

Gaming used to be "of gamers, by gamers, for gamers".
In other words, games then were based on you becoming a part of the machine, of interacting quickly in a process that required you to think in micro-second intervals.
The game programs that came this way were generally perceived as being lower in quality than cassette games, but this wasn't always true.

AGH Atari 2600 Review -- Combat
In this two-player only game, the object is to shoot and destroy your opponent's tank more times than he or she does the same to you before time runs out.
Both games play a bit faster than Tank, and since the playfield doesn't have any borders, you can make your plane exit from one side of the screen and reappear on the other.
When you consider that Combat was originally available for the Atari VCS in 1977, you'll begin to realize what a perfect pack-in game it was for the system.

By the time the Apple II was released in 1977 Nolan, Al, and many of the original employees at Atari were on their way out the door of the company they helped build.

Even baseball, the national pastime for nearly a century and an apparent natural to be reenacted on a TV screen or computer monitor, lacked the prestige of its younger brother.
Part of this was due to the way that the National Football League surged in popularity at the same time as the video game era dawned.

Gamespot seems to be leaning a little toward the playable version, based on the fact that in FYE.com's product description of the game the demo is referred to as "Star Wars Battlefront X-Box Video Game Demo".
Gamespot's reasoning is that if the demo is console specific, despite the game's release on the PS2, PC and the Xbox, then it will be a playable demo on a specific (Xbox) console.
Nonetheless, we are very excited to see the merging of games and DVDs, particularly when it involves the most highly anticipated DVD of all time.
