 Bernard Hinault - free-definition
Victories in the Tour de France were marred by injuries; Hinault was forced to abandon the 1980 Tour de France while wearing the yellow jersey due to a knee injury and missed the 1983 Tour de France due to a knee injury.
He often acts as a race official, and is a common sight on the podiums at the stage finishes of Tour de France to greet the stage winners and jersey holders.
The success of his transformation was evident in his convincing victory in the 1985 Tour de France, where Hinault and his lieutenant Greg Lemond led the La Vie Claire team to top finishes.

 Bernard Hinault
He successfully led a riders' strike in 1978 to protest split stages in the Tour, in which the riders had to ride a stage in the morning and another one in the afternoon.
In the 1985 Tour Hinault's lieutenant Greg LeMond was under strong pressure from Koechli and his team manager to support Hinault and not try for a victory of his own.
In the 1980 Tour he was forced to abandon while wearing the yellow jersey because of a knee injury, but he returned to victory in the following two years, 1981 and 1982.

ESPN.com: OLY - Tour de force: Armstrong finishes drive for five
Armstrong's fierce duel with Ullrich made this centennial Tour the most gripping in years, drawing millions of fans who thronged winding mountain climbs and adorned villages along the route with banners for the riders.
So action-packed was this Tour that Armstrong was prepared for the unexpected -- even Sunday, on the largely processional final stage.
TOUR VICTORIES: Five straight from 1999-03, tying the record for consecutive wins set by Miguel Indurain of Spain (1991-95).

The race also got hillier and the stages got shorter to make the whole three weeks more exciting for the fans and it certainly seems to have worked - the last few Vueltas have been real nail biters.
