Building on an already successful career as a commercial artist, Dietz began pursuing his dream to specialize in aviation art in 1978, long before aviation art enjoyed the popularity it does today.
Dietz's career in the world of fine aviation art was boosted by exposure on the back cover of the Experimental Aircraft Association's member magazine, Sport Aviation, and also through an annual aviation art competition sponsored by the EAA.
Dietz won "Best of Show" in the EAA's aviation art contest so many times that the title "EAA Master Artist" was created - originally just for him - which allowed Jim to continue to exhibit his work in the contest while making it possible for other artists to capture the top award.
