Thus, for many country performers, both past and present, the working world portrayed in their music is a world in which they have had personal experience.10 Contemporary country music lyrics graphically portray the world of work experienced by the Southern labor force, continuing a tradition established with the origins of industry.
Jimmie Rodgers, the first country singer to reach a truly national audience, sang often of the working man. His narrator was often the stylized rambling man down on his luck, at once to be pitied for his lack of material wealth and envied for his freedom.
The music portrays a keen awareness of the plight of the worker, of the necessity for daily toil, of the long odds against achieving wealth or position.

A FLIGHT FROM LIMINALITY: HOME IN COUNTRY AND GOSPEL MUSIC   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
This is so because the liminality to which country music has traditionally responded is not the chosen liminality of postmodern professionals, but the liminality imposed upon working-class folks by economic forces beyond their control.
If New Age music is the music of the Yuppies, country music is, at least traditionally, the music of the "Rednecks." The liminality experienced by rednecks results from the marginality of the redneck community.
As country music becomes the music of the upwardly mobile, it ceases to be the voice of the liminally stuck.

TIME Magazine: Country Music Archive Collection
Country has achieved its new luster without abandoning its heritage: a heritage so stubbornly rooted in storytelling and simple melody that it has never quite left behind the farm in Poor Valley, Va., where a moody lumberman named A.P.  Hank Snow Biography
Nashville may be the country music capital of the world but most country singers moved there from other towns, states and countries.
One of country music's real icons was Hank Snow and what he brought to that style of music was his own style of artistry, from his early yodeling and traveling songs to his stage costumes.
Strangely enough, Snow challenged the burgeoning rock 'n roll by recording some mild rockabilly singles and injecting them with his rhumba and boogie but the diluted music did not see the same success as his other work, the real country music he continued to land on the charts into the mid '60s.

"FROM SWEETHEARTS TO SADDLE PALS: THE EMERGING ROLES OF FEMALE PERFORMERS IN COUNTRY MUSIC"
A part of the problem lies in the fact that recorded country music from the pre-1940 period is difficult to find, but it is also likely that women performers were far less numerous during this period.
Coltman (1978:161) reports of that of the 377 pieces of recorded country music from the period 1922-1931 he had heard, only 12 (3%) were female soloists or all female groups, only 5% of the records were male groups who would feature a female soloist, and only about 5% were known to feature women as instrumentalists.
This is not to diminish the importance of the contributions made by those women who were involved in commercial country music's formative years, but to suggest that the socially scripted roles of southern white women prior to World War II may have suppressed their role in commercial music.

The name 'English Country Music' first appeared as the title of an LP recorded by Bill Leader in Shipdham, Norfolk in August 1962 and released by Reg Hall and Bob Davenport in September 1965.
There was, and still is, great music in other parts of England as well, most notably Bob Cann, all round entertainer and spectacular melodeon player from Dartmoor in Devon, or Willy Atkinson (mouth organ) from Alnwick in the North East and these musicians soon came to a wider audience at Festivals and through LP releases.
