 Blue Oyster Cult: Secrets Revealed!
Some of the best insights into creativity Martin’s ever heard - through 900 interviews as metal’s most widely recognized journalist - came from Sandy Pearlman (also the band’s manager during the golden years), Richard Meltzer, Helen Wheels, David Roter and John Shirley, along with cover artists Greg Scott and Ioannis.
BOC were heavy metal enough to duke it out with Kiss, Rush, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent and Black Sabbath, yet smart, funny, ironic and jaded enough to please the tough New York critics, of which more than a couple mingled within their ranks.
Along the way, Martin talks (in some cases numerous times) with Buck, Eric, Albert and Joe, along with new drummer Bobby Rondinelli, legendary producer of the band Murray Krugman and BOC expert Bolle Gregmar.

Corpse paint - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hellhammer and King Diamond of Mercyful Fate (Who used Corpsepaint as early as 1978 in his band Black Rose) were perhaps the first death or black metal groups to use corpse paint in the early 1980s.
Particularly striking are the similarities between black metal corpsepaint and the ghoulish apparence of the members of the Oskorei, a legion of dead souls in Norse mythology.
Early Norwegian black metal bands such as Mayhem, Emperor (band), Immortal, Darkthrone, and Satyricon are arguably responsible for maintaining the popularity of the corpsepaint among today's black metal acts.

 trakMARX - Metal Urbain
Metal Urbain became the first act to release a single on the ground breaking British independent label, Rough Trade; "Paris Maquis"/"Cle De Contact" - RT001, in January 1978 (sadly absent from recent retrospectives).

 TrouserPress.com :: Metal Urbain
The Metal Boys were an early splinter of Metal Urbain: they modify the formula to include more (fragmentary) English lyrics and electronic processing.
Shouted vocals (in French), distorted slash'n'twang punk guitars, ticking percussion — that's what characterizes Metal Urbain, fiery young Gauls who were France's most extreme "progressive" punks at the time.
This is harsh and forbidding music, but the group's ultimate place in history will be assured more than anything by their having cut, in 1978, the first single in the extensive Rough Trade catalog.

 Encyclopedia: Heavy metal music
Many people, including Heavy Metal musicians of prominent groups, believe that the foundations of the definitve style and sound of pure heavy metal were laid down by Judas Priest (another Birmingham band) with three of their early albums: "Sad Wings Of Destiny" (1976), "Sin After Sin" (1977) and "Stained Class" (1978).
Whereas a painting is experienced visually, a symphony experienced audibly, a heavy metal band's "image" and the common theme that binds all their music is expressed in the artwork on the album, the set of the stage, the tone of the lyrics, in addition to the sound of the music.
Heavy metal's bombastic excesses, exemplified by hair metal, have often been parodied, most famously in the film This Is Spinal Tap (see also the phenomenon of the heavy metal umlaut).

 Artistopia Music - Rush
The lyrics of that time were heavily influenced by science fiction and, in a few cases, the writings and philosophy of Ayn Rand, as exhibited most prominently by 1975's Anthem (named after Rand's novel) 1976's ''2112 (album)2112'' and 1978's ''Hemispheres (1978 album)Hemispheres''.
Albums prior to 1980's ''Permanent Waves'' are a mix of heavy metal and progressive rock similar to Yes or Genesis (band)Genesis.
From that point on, their albums of the 1980s tended to incorporate more keyboards and stuck to accessible style that began with Permanent Waves, even to the point that their recordings in the later 1980s and 1990s have sometimes been derided as being too mainstream.

 RUSH Hemispheres reviews and MP3
Hemispheres went one step further. For starters a smoother sound was evidenced, not so jarring as say the AFTK title track and the keyboards took a larger percentage of the whole sound.Another development was Lifeson's guitar signature, the arpeggiated chorus sound that was to become his trademark for the next 10 years.
Overall, Hemispheres may be the least accessible album of the Rush catalog, but you could grow to love it if you like to hear more complexity and less progressive-pop-metal or what not.
The title song is what made the album, with lyrics alluding to famous greeks (Dionysus and Apollo).

Throw in some death metal vocals and a drummer who spends more time on all those "other" percussion instruments than on a bass/snare/hi-hat mania, and you might think that this album is too artsy-fartsy to be any fun.
Some of the songs get bogged down a bit with overly repetitious choruses ("Thorns and a Rose" for example), which is really too bad because they would all be fine songs otherwise.
Even here though there is a fierceness to the vocals and riffs that keeps it from sounding like anyone else.

Budgie's 1978 offering, Impeckable, is a very uninspired affair, lacking both the adventurous songwriting and refreshing sense of humor characteristic of the band's early records.
Though not nearly as celebrated as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, or Deep Purple, Budgie was one of the finest heavy metal bands of the early to mid-'70s.
By the dawn of the '80s, the veteran British metal trio Budgie had experienced a career boost, thanks to the rise of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and subsequently, a sudden mass appreciation of all things metal.
