High-speed rail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
High-speed rail is public transport by rail at speeds in excess of 200 km/h (124 mph).
Railways were the first form of mass transportation, and until the development of the motorcar in the early 20th century had an effective monopoly on land transport.
By building a new rail infrastructure with 20th century engineering, including elimination of constrictions such as roadway at-grade (level) crossings, frequent stops, a succession of curves and reverse curves, and not sharing the right-of-way with freight or slower passenger trains, higher speeds (250–300 km/h) are maintained.

BC Rail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
BC Rail (AAR reporting marks BCOL and BCIT), known as the British Columbia Railway between 1972 and 1984 and as the Pacific Great Eastern Railway (PGE; AAR reporting marks PGE and PGER) before 1972, was a railway that operated in the Canadian province of British Columbia between 1912 and 2004.
Looking to retire BC Rail's debt, on May 13, 2003, British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell reneged on promises to the contrary and announced that the government would seek a private sector partner to run the operations of the railway while retaining ownership of the right-of-way.
With an amendment to the Western Grain Transportation Act in 1985 that included the railway in the Act, it became economical for the railway to transport grain, and it also carried grain from Northern Alberta bound for Prince Rupert, interchanging with CN at Dawson Creek and Prince George.

Similar to passengers transport an increase of speed is an important driving force for new developments in rail freight transport.
In contradiction to passenger transport however, technological developments are less focused towards increasing the maximum speed of trains, but rather towards improving the transit time in the total logistic chain.
Since speed of terminal transport and handling are assumed to rise, this might have a negative influence on energy consumption.

One reason is that definitions of what a metro is may vary according to who you ask (a popular definition is here).
Differences between heavy rail, metros and trams began fading in the past few decades as more metros now include stretches shared with roads or heavy rail.
In other cases, metros have gradually evolved from tram or rail lines, so it is often difficult to tell the actual length or date of inauguration of a metro.
