1976 NHL Amateur Draft -- Don Murdoch
The NHL, however, decided to fine Murdoch $500 and suspend him for the entire 1978-79 season on July 6, 1978.
The 80-game suspension was the most severe penalty given to an NHL player since the 1945-46 season, when two players were banned from the league for allegedly betting on their games.
NHL president John Ziegler wanted to use Murdoch to set an example for other players by showing the extreme price of a drug-related offense while playing in the league.

 Articles - Québec Nordiques
The 1978-79 season would be the final one for the WHA and for J.C. Tremblay, who retired at the end of the season and had his number 3 retired before the Nordiques merged into the National Hockey League together with three other WHA teams, the Winnipeg Jets, New England Whalers, and the Edmonton Oilers.
A rivalry with the Montreal Canadiens intensified during the 1983-84 NHL season culminating in the infamous "Vendredi Saint" brawl during the 1984 playoffs, after which the Habs elminated the Nordiques from the postseason.
They won their first NHL division title in 1985-86 but were met with a defensive collapse in the playoffs, allowing the Hartford Whalers to advance.

The Herald - Minor-league hockey cards to hit market in fall
The first releases will be autographed cards of Bobby Hull (the new league’s commissioner) and WHA all-time scoring and games played leader André Lacroix (who joined the Whalers in 1978-79 and was a member of Hartford’s inaugural NHL squad the following season).
Because of their scarcity, commons from the WHA series that year are worth at least twice as much as commons from the first three series that featured NHL players -- approximately $5 to $10, according to Beckett Hockey Collector.
WHA CARDS: Although the new WHA will not start until next season, Pacific will be producing retrospective-themed WHA cards throughout the 2004 calendar year.

Season was shortened due to the 1994-95 NHL lockout.
The 1989 season was a troubled one because of this trade, and for the first time since 1982, the Oilers were out of the playoffs in the first round, losing a seven-game series to the Kings.
