Experimental archaeology (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-31) |
 | | According to John Coles, experimental archaeology has four different levels: replication of artifacts’ shapes, replication of artefacts’ manufacturing processes, studying the function of artefacts, and the contextual level (Coles 1979: 36-43). |
 | | Experimental archaeology is a research method, which requires a clear starting point (a research question), objective criticism, knowledge of archaeological source materials, knowledge of tradition or technology, and finally, publication and application in the scientific field. |
 | | Lighter, carefree experiments could be included under the terms ’experimenting’ or ’experiential’ archaeology, which both emphasize the unscientific and popular nature of experiments and their results. |
