Introduction to 1979 Volume V   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
But communicating that excitement to modern urban students proves difficult: for these students, the act of reading is a struggle, school is an arena of defeat, the people and ideas in books seem distant and silly.
Yet we persist, haunted by the conviction that the literature we love is a locus of value, that reading it is an experience we owe our students—even the unwilling ones.
If there is a principle of unity, it is the passionate conviction, shared by every member of the seminar, that literature celebrates the essentially human, and that teaching it remains a high and urgent calling.

1979 - 80 Literature Electives Survey   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Other reasons for a course's popularity are its relevance to contemporary life (e.g., children's literature); its accessibility, which sometimes means its contemporaneity (science fiction) and sometimes its lack of sophisticated reading matter (film); its cultural familiarity (Bible as literature); its nontraditional structure (women in literature); and its cultural import (Shakespeare).
Needless to say, the study of literature for literature's sake is not a motivating force to undergraduates electing literature courses in 1980, if indeed it ever was.
About half of the respondents noted that literature sections had declined recently, about a quarter said that literature offerings were holding steady, a very few mentioned that interest in writing seemed to be stimulating interest in literature as well, while the remainder did not discuss the effect of writing courses on literature offerings.
