Craig Raine His poetry collections include the acclaimed The Onion, Memory (1978), A Martian Sends a Postcard Home (1979), A Free Translation (1981), Rich (1984) and History: The Home Movie (1994), an epic poem that celebrates the history of his own family and that of his wife. His poetry is sometimes characterised as 'glittering beads on a string'. Literature Winner 1979 / Cleveland Arts Prize The author of more than a dozen books of poetry and prose, Oliver earned the Cleveland Arts Prize for Literature in 1979. She was honored with the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1984 for her volume American Primitive, and won the National Book Award in 1992 for New and Selected Poems, a collection covering nearly 30 years of work. Dub Poetry, Overview It is often said that the term "dub poetry" was invented in 1979 by the Jamaican poet Oku Onuora (Orlando Wong) to refer to a type of poetry that had been in existence since the mid-1970's, and that had been heavily influenced by reggae music. Dub poetry thus relies heavily on the rhythm of reggae music and is an attempt at fusing popular music with poetry. THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES - DVD Matheson was brought on board to adapt Bradbury's anthology The Martian Chronicles to mini-serial TV in 1979--and the result is a long discussion in three parts that finds Matheson winnowing away most, though not all, of Bradbury's fluffy poesy to reveal the essential emptiness at the core of Bradbury's flights of social speculation. Likewise, a scene where a shapeshifting Martian appears to Father Peregrine (Weaver) as Christ in his passion threatens to examine the cruelty embedded in the idea of a literal communion mass (this was the series' most controversial sequence)--but washes out as a meek variation on the series' theme that mankind is rather small-minded. raine Craig Raine established his name as a poet with A Martian Sends a Postcard Home (1979), which inspired what came to be called the ‘Martian school’ of poetry, poets such as Raine’s former Oxford-pupil Christopher Reid, who describe the world as if seen through the eyes of extraterrestrial beings. A striking feature of their poetry is the ‘conceit’, the use of unusual, at times even far-fetched metaphor which proves its aptness in the end.
