This, her second film, is an uncompromising and somewhat nostalgic look at sexual awakening in a young girl, set in the beautiful locale of the French provincial countryside.
Whilst visually the film is impressive, and we are treated to a fine performance from another former acting legend, Simone Signoret, the film does lack depth and intimacy.
The latter half of the film when the young Marie becomes envious of her mother and conspires to rekindle the passion between her parents has some touching moments but feels cold and contrived.

Alien (1979) Film Review - MovieWeb
In some sense, it's wonderful to see a twenty year old film imagine a future that has, in many ways, already come and gone, gazing back at those bland, faded-green computer readouts with nary a graphic to be seen, when only wireframe was the best CG around.
Yes, indeed, this newest release of this classic film is every bit an improvement upon a thriller that's already difficult to improve upon, and if you've an ounce of sense, you'll head out to see it on the big screen.
It was the "how." With a painterly eye and a manic pace, Scott gave the shadows of the starship Nostromo a pulse of their own, a nearly intangible breath, with just enough darkness to conceal the slick grace of the Alien onboard.

He returned in 1979 to film the ceremony again, documenting the change in times and mores.
"If the 1968 film and the 1979 version are more than merely interesting on their own," wrote the late Alain Philippon in his book on Eustache, "the contrast between the two is breathtaking."
Right before the events of May 1968, Eustache went back to the village where he was born, and made a film faithfully recording a charming ceremony: a contest to crown the town's most virtuous young girl (La Rosière of the title).

The Nick Schager Film Project: Zombie (1979): B+
Zombie (1979): B+ Originally titled Zombie 2 as a craven attempt to piggyback on the success of Night of the Living Dead, Lucio Fulci’s Zombie has nothing to do with George A. Romero’s undead classic, though that doesn’t mean it’s not without its gruesome charms.
The Italian goremeister’s breakthrough film features not a single believable character or plot point, no semblance of narrative cohesion or momentum, scraggly editing, horribly dubbed dialogue and a deadening lack of subtext.
Yet via a few satisfyingly blood-splattered set pieces and some nice panoramic shots of voodoo-spawned zombies shuffling through a dusty Caribbean shantytown and emerging from the graves of centuries-old Spanish conquistadors, Fulci’s film nevertheless achieves a ghastly sort of brilliance.
