Between the Monaco and French GPs there was a race in Spain which was won by Alan Jones in his Williams, but as the war between FISA and FOCA was developing this was later declared to have been illegal as it featured only the FOCA teams (Ferrari, Renault and Alfa Romeo did not attend).
An agreement was reached in time for the French GP and so it did count towards the World Championship and the entry was not very different from that at Monaco although Marc Surer was back in action for ATS, his ankle injuries from South African having healed.
Qualifying resulted in a very French grid with Jacques Laffite and pole in his Ligier, Rene Arnoux second in the Renault and Didier Pironi third in his Ligier.

And thus the “Grande Semaine d'Auteuil” is created, with the Grand Steeple on the Sunday, the Grande Course de Haies on the Wednesday and the Drags on the Friday.
The Grande Course de Haies d'Auteuil is won by 5 lengths by the 5-year-old Le Paillon who, would go on to claim victory on the flat in the Grand Prix de Deauville that August and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in October.
The Grand Steeple is brought forward by three weeks and held in the last week of May. First Gold gives the Marquise de Moratalla a fifth victory in the Grand Steeple, after that of The Fellow (1991), Ucello II (1993, 1994) and Ubu III (1995).

Two weeks before the French Grand Prix at Le Castellet the teams had assembled at Jarama for what was to be the Spanish Grand Prix.
Five days before the French race a meeting was held in London between FOCA and FISA and it was agreed that the French race would be staged and skirts would be permitted.
The other French team, Renault, had a poor showing their home event with Arnoux back in fifth place while Jabouille retired yet again.

Renault won the '79 French Grand Prix with Jabouille, while Villeneuve and René Arnoux waged a fantastic duel behind, with Villeneuve crossing the line 0.3 seconds ahead.
After the San Marino Grand Prix, in which Pironi passed Villeneuve, against team orders, while the Ferraris were easily running 1-2 under turbo power, Gilles vowed he would never again speak to his team mate.

The original, 14-mile long Nürburgring was commissioned in the 1930s in order to combat local unemployment and from 1951-76 was home to the German Grand Prix, apart from 1959 (Berlin) and 1970 (Hockenheim).
These are strategic positions placed around a Grand Prix circuit where F.I.A. observers watch for driving infringements, the actions of corner and safety crews and the recovery of stranded vehicles.

Giancarlo Baghetti retired from Formula One after the 1967 Italian Grand Prix when the Ford DFV powering his Lotus 49 failed 18 laps from the end of the race while he was running in sixth place.
He captured the Grand Premio di Siracusa - beating the Porsches of Dan Gurney and Joakim Bonnier, the Gran Premio di Napoli on the Posillipo circuit, and the Grand Prix de l'ACF - the French Grand Prix - at Reims, once again holding off Gurney for the victory.
Emerson Fittipaldi quietly walked away from driving Formula One at the end of the 1980 season where his departure from the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen was his fourth consecutive failure to finish a race in the Fittipaldi F8.

In his debut at the 1975 German Grand Prix he finished 8th, retired in the next GP, to finish 9th at Monza.
Two weeks later at the 1976 German Grand Prix Ertl was one of the four drivers who helped pull Niki Lauda from his burning Ferrari after Lauda's infamous crash during the second lap of the race.
Ertl tried once again with ATS in the 1980 German Grand Prix with the same result, so the 1978 Austrian Grand Prix in front of his home crowd was the last GP he actually took part in.

Patrick was born on August 9th 1944 and was tragicly killed while testing his Alfa Romeo car at Hockenhiem on August 1st 1980.
In 1980 however Patrick after 7 months in a wheelchair returned to F1 with the Alfa Romeo team and showed that he had lost none of his ability's behind the wheel.
Sadly though in mid season while testing at the hockenhiem circuit Patrick's car veered off track and hit an unprotected guard rail and died instanly.

However Jean-Pierre Jabouille had decided to retire as he was no longer competitive as a result of the leg injuries he had suffered in Canada in 1980 and so Tambay became the second Talbot Ligier driver.
Piquet was given third place (although he was fifth on the road) while the remaining points went to Arnoux, Pironi and de Angelis.
