The NHL Entry Draft is a collective meeting in which the franchises of the National Hockey League systematically select the rights to available amateur players who meet the eligibility requirements to play professional hockey in the NHL.
The first NHL Amateur Draft was held on June 5, 1963 at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, Quebec.
The 1980 draft was held in the Montreal Forum and there were more than 2,500 fans in attendance.

The NHL announced the suspension on March 11, 1988.
The NHL determined that Nicholls had deliberately swung a stick at Daigneault's bare hand after Daigneault dropped his gloves to fight, and that Nicholls' stick had deflected off the hand and hit Daigneault in the back of the helmet.
Suspended by NHL for seven off-days without pay (a total of $10,143) and fined $500 for swinging stick into Darren Banks' chest as the two squared off to fight during Edmonton's Sept. 28, 1992, preseason game vs. Boston in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
