Viking Answer Lady Webpage - Vikings in Ireland
At the time the Vikings first arrived in Ireland, the land was nominally ruled over by the Árd Rí, or High King of the Irish, but was in truth a warring collection of petty kingdoms which gave lip service only to the ceremonial overlordship of the Ui-Naill.
The petty kings of Ireland, busy warring among themselves and jockeying for power or a few more cattle, ultimately were the cause of the Vikings' great successes in Ireland, and the divisiveness of the small Irish kingdoms with their many rivalries ensured the Celts' downfall.
The first of the "Kings of all the Northmen in Ireland" was a man named Óláfr, a relative of the Norse kings of the Scottish Islands and the Hebrides, and remotely related to certain prominent Icelanders.

Neave, a close friend of Thatcher and the man who was slated to become the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, was killed by a car bomb planted by the INLA in the parking lot of the House of Commons.
He hinted on 9 December 1980 that the hunger strikers were waging a useless campaign against the government, and he tried to explain that the British were unable to give the prisoners all they demanded.

 The Hunger Strike of 1980
In October of 1980, the Northern Ireland prison officials granted all the prisoners of Long Kesh the right to wear civilian-type clothing issued by the prisons, a token gesture in response to the five demands of the prisoners.
Apart from the prison uniform issue, the British government refused to budge for any of the demands made by the strikers.
The strike lasted until December of 1980, when Sean McKenna was in the hospital and several others were very ill. At that point, the National H-Block Committee attempted to prevent any deaths by requesting a meeting on Dec. 5 with Humphrey Atkins, the Secretary of State.

The mid to late 1970's were a time of high inflation in Ireland, and by 1980 the old series with a highest value of 8p was no longer adequate.
On 11th June 1980, the 55-year old designs finally gave way to a rather functional new series of designs, with the release of the 1p, 2p, 4p, 6p, 8p, 18p, and 24p values, followed on 22nd August 1985 by the 20p, 30p and 50p.
Inflation continued at a lesser rate through the most of the 1980's, and on 6th October 1988 another new series was issued, this time with a top value of £1.

Classic Insurance - 1980's cars - Forums Ireland
It really is a pity that we can't get "classic" or "limited mileage" for cars, say, over 10 years old, here in Ireland.
Many cars built in the 1980's are being overlooked (and scrapped !) because classic enthusiasts would have to pay full insurance rates for the car.
Also, why can't we get "everyday use" insurance for old cars, as is the case in Northern Ireland and the UK ?
