 FLORIDA ARCHAEOLOGY Illustrated Overview
Archaeology is the study of the human past by analysis of the material remains.
Perhaps the most notable development in Florida archaeology in recent years is the dramatic growth of contract archaeology, which is the result of a host of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances designed to minimize or avoid the loss of archaeological knowledge due to construction or land development.
From 1980 to 1989 archaeological investigations were conducted at Hontoon Island, where thousands of excavated artifacts, flora, and fauna wove a story of a way of life that existed there from about AD 500 to AD 1600.

Lipe (1977) recognized this problem in his classic paper on conservation archaeology, and recommended that the discipline find out just what the public finds appealing about archaeology, and then use the results to promote the case for conservation, research, and education activities.
Feder (1984:536) concluded that "students are largely ignorant of archaeology and related topics" and "are a ripe audience for pseudoscientists and charlatans who parade as archaeologists and would have the public accept all sorts of unacceptable nonsense about the past and its study".
Although the sample had a higher than average education level, it lacked both a clear understanding of what archaeology is and a basic knowledge of regional prehistory, and was unaware of existing legislation.

Thus, with the passing years the lake bottom has acquired a collection of ships and artifacts, a collection with much to tell us about maritime technology and shipboard life over a span of three centuries.
Over the past twenty years researchers working for the Institute of Nautical Archaeology and the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum have been able to locate and study examples of nearly every type of vessel that ever floated upon Champlain's waters.
The many spectacular finds are making it possible to write a new and more detailed history, one that concentrates on the ships and on the people, some famous and many unknown, who sailed upon the "mountain waves" of Lake Champlain.
