The 1981 United States Grand Prix West was a Formula One race held on March 15, 1981 at Long Beach, California.
It was the third consecutive Grand Prix win for Jones, and his second consecutive in the United States, after seizing the 1980 Driver's title with season-ending wins in Montreal, Canada and Watkins Glen, New York.
It was the first time for two Americans to finish in the points since Andretti and Mark Donahue at the 1975 Swedish Grand Prix.

At Las Vegas, in the final Grand Prix of the season, Carlos Reutemann was feeling very lonely, and was probably paying for the mistake he had made at the beginning of the season when he won the Brazilian Grand Prix from his team-mate, Alan Jones, although he had a second-driver's contract.
But it was mainly due to his fantastic record of 15 consecutive finishes in the points, between the Belgian Grands Prix of 1980 and 1981, that he was in a position to challenge for the world crown before the last round in Las Vegas.

In 1982, when there were three Grands Prix in the USA, the final one was called United States Grand Prix Las Vegas, the other two being East and West, and at Detroit and Long Beach respectively.
There were two Grands Prix in a year on eight occasions, and Indianapolis was still on the calendar when the first two US Grands Prix were run.
Williams started from the front row of the grid in 1981 at Las Vegas, and it was Renault's turn a year later, and Ferrari occupied the front row in 1983 at Long Beach and Lotus did the same thing in 1984 at Dallas.
