 Amazon.com: Video: Heavy Metal (1981)
Heavy Metal was a film whose look, artwork, storyline, and even sound mix were positively amateurish, even for 1981, and it's probably the single best example of how far behind American animation is, on a technical level, compared to Japanese anime.
Some critics and film historians have labeled 1981's HEAVY METAL as the last film to genuinely reflect the mishmash sensibilities of the post-hippy 1970s counter-culture, and stylistically and thematically this appears to be true.
If you divorced the first Heavy Metal from excuses such as age and sentimentality, what you'll find is a boring, overlong, fragmented, visually flat piece that's more filler than substance, one which should have been 30 minutes long instead of 90.

BNR Metal Pages -- Grim Reaper
Grim Reaper's introduction to the metal scene is found on the classic 1981 compilation Heavy Metal Heroes with their dark, very NWOBHM-sounding "The Reaper", easily one of the top tracks on that album (though not really sounding a lot like their later material).
Eventually they signed to tiny Ebony Records, by which time they had recruited a new vocalist in Steve Grimmett and had adopted a more mainstream metal style.
Somehow their debut album, See You In Hell, attracted the interest of RCA, who eventually re-released the album and jump-started the band's career.

Heavy Metal 2000 by Frederic Talgorn
The vignette format is abandoned in favor of a single, unifying storyline involving a bold heroine, (modeled after and featuring the voice of cult centerfold Julie Strain-Eastman) whose traits, in true “Heavy Metal” fashion, are chiefly represented by her large breasts and her ability to kick the crap out of everyone.
The main “heroic” theme (heard in track 4, “Julie and Kerrie”) is reminiscent of Bernstein’s theme for the “Den” segment of the 1981 film.
However, one of the unsung highlights of the first film was a score by Elmer Bernstein, which helped set an atmosphere for the film that the rock songs alone could not accomplish.

Based on the adult counter-culture cult comic of the same name, HEAVY METAL definitely is a sort of spacey concatenation of disparate visual aesthetics and heterogeneous science-fiction/fantasy narratives.
Each individual segment of HEAVY METAL was scripted and directed independently of the others, which likely accounts for the varying aesthetic and narrative styles.
