Philip Tagg | Music Teacher Training Problemsand Popular Music Research (1981)
Music teaching is still in a critical state in many industrialised countries and Sweden is no exception to the rule.
I feel that this aspect of popular music is in sore need of public research, not least because the individual living his/her life in the everyday mainstream of popular music deserves as much of our research time and energy as the rock or jazz fan.
The study of this music, it is clear in both practice and theory, requires a radically different type of systematisation to that offered at present in the higher education of music.

Music journalist Moser and I began covering the music scene as a team.
From 1977 to 1981, I photographed the Austin, Texas music scene.
But a phenominal mix of musical styles was co-existing in Austin: country, progressive country, folk, world, blues, jazz, progressive rock, rock and roll, rockabilly, glam-rock, gospel, psychedelica, humor/parody, etc., etc. These varied styles all found a common home and faithful audiences at venues like Soap Creek Saloon, Antone’s and the famous Armadillo World Headquarters.

 Music, Mind, and Meaning
To believe otherwise is wishful thinking or "mathematics envy." Many musical problems that resist formal solutions may turn out to be tractable anyway, in future simulations that grow artificial musical semantic networks, perhaps by "raising" simulated infants in traditional musical cultures.
This little theory is not meant to work for any senseless bag of musical tricks, but only for those certain kinds of music that, in their cultural times and places, command attention and approval.
Each musical artist must forecast and pre-direct the listener's fixations to draw attention here and distract it from there–to force the hearer (again, like a magician does) to ask only the questions that the composition is about to answer.

 stevemorse.com: Modern Recording & Music, April, 1981
The surroundings seem strangely at odds with the soaring violin music emanating from the control room speakers inside the unmarked, dingy-looking building as producer/guitarist Steve Morse coaxes perfection from the flying fingers of fellow band member, Allen Sloan.
The band's practically unclassifiable brand of classical-country-jazz-rock music isn't that easy to sell, and they have to try and walk the thin line between commercial demands and artistic standards as they labor eight to 12 hours a day to finish up their second release for Arista Records.
Capricorn never seemed to know quite what to do with the talented group of former University of Miami music students and so it was with great expectations that they put out their first LP for Arista last year, Dregs of the Earth.

This CD collects most of the Carpenters most popular music from their 13 years of creating a style that was seminal in the definition of adult contemporary music.
While many people may attempt to apply "timeless" to the music of various artists, thus far the Carpenters' music is timeless, and I think it will continue to be timeless in the adult contemporary genre for some time to come.
This CD is perfect for both casual and serious fans of the Carpenters, for anyone who appreciates mellow music, and for those who consider adult contemporary to be their favorite type of music.

Delta 5: Singles and Sessions 1979-1981 - PopMatters Music Review
What results is a sense that relationships themselves are structurally flawed, an argument that the unstable musical structure, the stumbling drum patterns and wearily looping and dueling runs of the group's multiple bass players and staccato guitar interjections, reiterates.
So after making it quite clear that coordination between the sexes is virtually impossible and suggesting relationships inevitably slide into mutually degrading stalemates of recrimination, there is something grim and ironic about such songs as "Delta 5" that then invite you to dance.
Like the band's dismantling of love songs, its approach to dance music is spiked with contradiction and dialectic tension.
