For several years now I have been trying to compile a list of television programs that have included gay/lesbian/bisexual characters as a part of their regular (or semi-regular) casts.
In Brass there was a character who was based on Sebastian in Brideshead Revisited (always carrying around a teddy bear).
The movie Fame had one gay character, Montgomery, and he was quickly written out at the start of the television series.
