This was the second time the games were held in Delhi as they were the host to the inaugural 1951 Asian Games.
Before the games officially began, the Asian Games Federation was dissolved and a reorganization gave birth to a new governing council named Olympic Council of Asia.
In preparation for the IX Asian Games, colour television was introduced in India in a big way, as the games were to be broadcasted in colour.
