  European Athletics - History of the European Athletics Championships
The idea of holding a European Athletics Championships was devised in 1933, with Hungarian official Szilard Stankovits as the prime mover, and the first Championships took place in Torino, Italy, in 1934.
In 1938, women participated in the European Athletics Championships for the first time, though their events were held in Vienna two weeks after the men’s competition in Paris.
Both Wooderson and Harbig set new championship records, as did Wooderson’s team mates Godfrey Brown in the 400m and Don Finlay in 110m hurdles (his time of 14.3 was also a European record); Harbig’s team mate Karl Hein in the hammer; and Finns Taisto Mäki in the 5000m and Ilmari Salminen in the 10000m.

Building of the Olympic Stadium began in 1980 and ended in 1982 in time for the 1982 European Championships in Athletics.

She ran in the AIAW Indoor National Championships in Columbia, Mo., in March 1980 and took first place in the 60 meters with a time of 7.30.
Set to defend her back-to-back titles in the 100 meters, Hodges prepared for the AIAW national championships in Eugene, OR, although her hamstring was sore.
She represented the U.S. Badminton Team in South Africa and the European Championships and was on the Uber Cup Squad in 1963 and 1966.

At the Youth Championships, for athletes under 18, Pittman starred for Australia, winning the 400m Hurdles and also made the final of the 400m.

Her five honors include a second-place finish at the 1981 AIAW Track Championships in the 5,000 meter race.
Carey represented Ireland in the 1980 World Cross Country Championships, the 1982 European Championship Marathon, the 1983 World Championship Marathon, and the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where she finished 28th overall in the marathon.
In 1984 she also finished second among the 10,500 competitors in the 10,000-meter Dublin Women's Road Race, the largest women's road race in the world; won both the 10,000-meter Quebec City Race and the Toronto 10,000-meter run; and placed sixth in the New York City Marathon.

After obtaining her bachelor's degree in 1934 and her master's in 1938, Magee was a member of the TWU faculty until her retirement in 1981 with the rank of associate professor.
Gandy's accomplishments were recognized by the Texas Association for Intercollegiate Athletics when she was awarded the Division III Gymnast of the Year in 1982.
In her first season of collegiate competition, German won the high jump at the AAU national championships and at the AIAW state, regional and national championships and then went on to compete in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich during the summer.

In 2001 the veteran committee of the Danish Athletics Federation choose Århus & Randers as the official Danish candidate cities for EVACS 2004.
The organising committee of EVACS 2004 is mainly rooted in the largest athletics club in Jutland, Århus 1900 A/M. The club has more than 900 members and a huge experience as organiser of large sports competitions.
The club relocated to the new Langvang Athletics Stadium in 1988 and has hosted the Danish Athletics Championships in 1998 and 2002.

Later in the season he won the bronze in the European Championships over 800 m behind Seb Coe and Tom McKean while beating Coe to the gold medal over the 1500 m.
He was favourite to win the gold medal over 1500 m at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 but a calf injury just before the games in a 1000 m race meant that he was only able to finish fourth in a close race.
Cram now works as a television presenter and athletics commentator predominantly for the BBC and as a motivational speaker.
