The 1982 Formula One season was the 33th FIA Formula One World Championship season.
The season featured tremendous on-track action and was extremely competitive, as Keke Rosberg (driving for Williams), Rene Arnoux and Alain Prost (Renault), Patrick Tambay and Didier Pironi (Ferrari), John Watson and Niki Lauda (McLaren), Nelson Piquet and Riccardo Patrese (Brabham), Elio de Angelis (Lotus), and Michele Alboreto (Tyrrell) all won races.
However, the season was marred by the deaths of drivers Riccardo Paletti and Gilles Villeneuve.

Like a boxer, however, Lauda could not resist the urge to make comeback, and in 1982 he rejoined Formula One, winning his third GP after returning and the 1984 title, over Prost, by the wafer-thin margin of 1/2 point (with Prost taking seven wins to Lauda's five).
Finally giving in to the years, Lauda retired for good with 25 GP wins after the 1985 season, and now serves as a consultant to the Ferrari Team and current F1 idol Michael Schumacher.

There are so many radical rules changes this season that I think reliability is going to be key over driver ability...even with the driver aids having been eliminated.
I watched part of qualifying on the first day, and after 15 guys Rubens was 1st, M Schumaccher(sp?) was 4th, ralf was in 14th, montoya was in the middle of the field, and the first toyota car had 7th.
His first season (with Renault anyway, but c'mon he's still pretty much a rookie) and he's already managed to break the record for youngest pole setter and he's made podium finishes in 2 out of the first 3 races.
