 INTERNATIONAL AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL COUNCIL
Under coach Graham Cornes, who played only a handful of games in the VFL, but was considered one of the greatest footballers of his era, the Crows proved competitive in their first season winning 10 matches to miss the finals by only three games.
After operating with twelve Victorian Suburban teams for over fifty years, the Victorian Football League (V.F.L) as it was then called, expanded in 1982 when South Melbourne became the Swans after moving to Sydney.
The Tigers stumbled again in 1998 and 1999, missing out on the finals after capitulating in the last game of the season.

 Adelaide Crows
On August 27th, 1981, the VFL advised that the application for entry into Season 1982 had not been approved, but that it wished to continue discussions on the possibility of a team being accepted in 1983 or 1984.
Friday June 12th, 1981 a special meeting of the South Australian National Football League, the then League Directors voted unanimously to support an application for the inclusion of an SANFL team in the Victorian Football League competition commencing Season 1982.
Discussion and negotiations with the VFL continued through 1987, 1988, and 1989, still without agreement reached; and in 1990 the VFL became the Australian Football League.

Premierships in Ballarat Football League: 1946 (B-grade), 1948 (B-grade), 1963, 1970, 1973, 1978-79, 1982-86, 1991-92, 1994-96.
In 1952, when the North Ballarat footballers were trying to make an impression in its debut season in the Ballarat league, their plight wasn't helped by oval refurbishment that included top-dressing with soil that was basically rocks and gravel.
The Roosters fielded teams in both the VFL and the Ballarat league in 1996 before placing all their eggs in the VFL basket from 1997.

 West Coast
To no ones surprise a team from West Australia, later named the West Coast Eagles, along with the Brisbane Bears, was chosen by the VFL to be the first expansion clubs since the packing off of South Melbourne to Sydney in 1982.
The 2001 season was disastrous for the WA sides with both finishing in the lower 25% of the teams and the Eagles finishing 14th.
In 1997 lighting was completed at Subiaco so from the 2001 season on they will not play any games at the WACA.

Wolfsburg's Bundesliga rivals and 1982/83 European Champion Clubs' Cup winners Hamburger SV also enter in the second round, and will await the result of the tie between FK Smederevo and FK Pobeda of F.Y.R. Macedonia, with the first leg in Serbia and Montenegro on Sunday.
Germany's VfL Wolfsburg, 2003 Intertoto Cup finalists, await the winners of the tie.
In all, eleven sides will be joining the 21 first-round qualifiers in the second stage, with a further eight teams receiving byes to the third round of the five-phase competition, which as in previous years will produce three winners earning a UEFA Cup berth.

John Newnham may only have played 106 games during his eight season VFL career with Fitzroy, but for much of that time he was without doubt one of the most effective and accomplished rovers in the competition.
Kevin O'Keeffe was a fearless and dashing defender in 92 games at Fitzroy from 1973 to 1980 and in 1982, and 24 games for East Perth (1980-1).
His time with the Bloods was almost unendurably frustrating, yielding one hundred per cent finals participation coupled with one hundred per cent ultimate failure, much of it at the hands of Port Adelaide, in four seasons in charge.

 WA Team of the Century - Interchange
By this time VFL club Carlton, which had been watching Hunter closely since at least 1977, had seen enough, and he was lured to Melbourne in time for the 1981 season.
His breathtaking form continued into 1982 when he was selected to play for Victoria against South Australia in a so called state of origin match.
Carlton went on to secure a 2nd successive flag.
