  Video Games in the 80's
In 1982 the illustrious and seemingly endlessly profitable video game industry began a downward facing slump and eventually came to a screeching halt and crashed due to a few major factors, none of them big enough on their own to do more than minimal damage, but together proved to be fatal.
Due to the huge success of the video game industry early on it became a target for money hungry companies who wanted to exploited the industry in order to profit from not only the video game industry but from their own companies using the video game they created as somewhat of an advertising tool.
So in light of this new development video game systems were left behind and by 1984 sales had plummeted to the point of almost being non existent and this is the reason we had the great crash of 1982-84.

Half-Real: A Dictionary of Video Game Theory
In a video game, the state of the game is kept in the RAM of the computer.
Games are characterized by the fact that the activity in itself is mostly harmless, but that the outcome of the game can be negotiated to lead more serious consequences (such as the exchange of money).
The outcome of a game is quantifiable, meaning that it is meant to be clear whether the outcome was one or another; who won the game (Salen and Zimmerman 2004, 96).

 History of Computing: Videogames Index
Though the history of video games is a subsection of the history of computing, it is important to recognize how integrated this entertainment medium is to the evolution of computing hardware and software.
Since a video game is a sensory experience, the sound, the visual elements, and the interface that the player uses to interact witht the game cannot be divorced from the programmed logic and instruction set that provides the experience.
However, in order to document a history pertaining to the evolution of video games, it is important to recognize the myriad influences that have the most significant relevance to the continued growth of this entertainment medium.

Video Game V.I.P. Most CAGDC players have heard of, and perhaps seen, the famous LIFE magazine spread that featured a lot of well-known early 1980's gamers, gathered in front of the famous Twin Galaxies arcade in Ottumwa, Iowa.
The January 1983 issue was the special "Year in Pictures" issue for 1982, and featured the classic 'gamers in the street' photo, taken early in the morning on Sunday, November 7, 1982.

Pitfall was a groundbreaking game for its time and pushed the limited hardware of the Atari 2600 to its limits.
The significant new game play element involved eating a mushroom to grow to twice the size, which enabled the player to not only bump but destroy certain blocks, as well as being able to absorb an extra hit from a monster without dying.
The game featured large, richly textured levels with an unbelievably long draw distance, so a player could stand on a high point and see parts of the level that were far off near the horizon.

Some of the most popular games of the era--sure to induce nostalgia in those who were teenagers between 1974 and 1984, and provide a history lesson to those who have come of age in the era of the Game Boy and the Playstation--are resurrected in BLIP.
The playable games offered in BLIP date from the late 1970s to the mid '80s, when the video arcade game infiltrated popular culture beginning with the release of dozens of space-battle games such as Space Invaders and Asteroids.
The latter game attracted not only Space Invaders pros but also businesspeople on lunch breaks and was so popular that arcade operators had to install larger coin boxes to hold all the quarters collected.

Currently, Nintendo's Game Boy Advance and DS control almost 100 percent of the portable game market, and the likes of Mario and Pokémon have enjoyed a near-monopoly for more than 15 years.
Portable gaming has been around nearly 30 years, and the successes and failures over the past three decades offer plenty of lessons for anyone aspiring to throw their hat into the handheld ring.
Games like Match of the Millennium and Metal Slug: 2nd Mission captured the feel of the NeoGeo games that inspired them, but were carefully redesigned to work within the limits of the portable format—a lesson everyone could do well to imitate.

The MBX system itself provides the video game player with some truly unique gaming options, many of which were not available to the public at the time of its release.

The January 1983 issue was the special "Year in Pictures" issue for 1982, and featured the classic 'gamers in the street' photo, taken early in the morning on Sunday, November 7, 1982 (Walter Day's 1998 record book erroneously indicates the date as the 9th).
Apparently, the photo was taken so early (8 AM according to the book), that some of the invited players, most of who traveled hundreds of miles, didn't show up in time to take part.
The number of originally invited players is not known, but, a total of 18 showed up for the event (Walter's book erroneously indicates that it was 17, along with also stating that 15 players appeared in the picture, which is obviously not correct !).

Whatever the purity of Coleco's intentions, their case fell apart in court, and the resulting legal precedent clearly prohibited game console publishers from adding value to their systems by swiping the functionality of a competitor.
