  NPS Archeology Program: Technical Brief 2
The Archaeology Group's efforts culminated in the legislative establishment of Homolovi Ruins State Park in 1986, the first archeological park to be operated by the Arizona State Parks Board, and for which an innovative interpretive approach is planned.
The "Volunteers in Archaeology" award is sponsored to honor an individual who has contributed his or her time and energy to promoting the protection and preservation of Arizona's archeological resources through public education or other means.
Archaeology Week is now a regular event in Arizona and our progress in cultural resources programs and public awareness has convinced us that other states could benefit from similar programs, perhaps a national Archaeology Week similar to the current National Historic Preservation Week.

 Anthropology 533: Andean Archaeology
Topics include the history of South American archaeology, peopling of the continent, origins and evolution of agriculture, early village life, ceremonial and domestic architecture, prehistoric art and symbolism, andean cosmology and astronomy, ancient technology, outside contacts and relationships, prehistoric economies and trade, social and political structure, state formation and urbanism, and early contacts with Europeans.
Because this is a 500-level course for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, a basic understanding of anthropological concepts and terms, especially those of socio-cultural anthropology and archaeology, is required.
The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology will host the 15th Annual Northeast Conference on Andean Archaeology and Ethnohistory on the weekend of October 19-20.

 Writing the Archaeology of the Black Diaspora
Kofi Argorsah (Archaeology Program, 1983), presently Chair of the Department of Black Studies at Portland State University, was awarded that university's premier teaching award in 2002 and has been an active member of the New York African burial Ground Project.
This winter he will be conducting his seventh research mission on the archaeology of maroons (runaway slaves who establish free societies) in Suriname, this follows his research in Jamaica and Trinidad.
Douglas Armstrong (Archaeology Program and 1983 Department of Anthropology) is now Professor of Antnropology and former Chair of the Department of Anthropology at Syracuse University and was president of the Society for Historical Archaeology in 2000-2001.

 Writing the Archaeology of the Black Diaspora
Douglas Armstrong (Archaeology Program and 1983 Department of Anthropology) is now Professor of Anthropology and former Chair of the Department of Anthropology at Syracuse University and was president of the Society for Historical Archaeology in 2000-2001.
Professor Armstrong has just published Creole Transformation to Freedom: Historical Archaeology of the East End Community, St. John, Virgin Islands (University of Florida Press, 2002) which breaks new ground on the archaeology of free African communities in a slave world.
These archaeologists have helped establish a vibrant scholastic tradition on the archaeology of the African diaspora, a tradition that is soon set to close here with the end of regular courses in historical archaeology at UCLA.

One-day programs (advance reservations required) allow visitors to explore the richness of ancestral Pueblo Indian culture and to visit a working archaeological site and laboratory, with a Crow Canyon educator as a guide.
There are student and school programs as well, from one-day programs to a three-week field school designed for high school students with a strong interest in archaeology.

The history and political economy of Moundville, a large Mississippian town in Alabama that was occupied from the 11th to the 17th centuries AD, have long been subjects of my research.
In collaboration with Steve Davis and others, I have worked on a variety of projects exploring the frontiers of digital publication in archaeology.
My long standing interest in the archaeology of the Lower Mississippi Valley is reflected in the edited volume, The Natchez District in the Old, Old South (Center for the Study of the American South, 1998).
