1984 was a successful record not only because it contained solid, catchy hard rock, but also because it incorporated synthesizers into the mix, the first metal album to do so to any serious extent.
It's come down to this album and their debut being the best albums, which is ironic given that 1984 is more polished, while maintaining the pulsing metal energy.
What is probably the most creative Van Halen album, and certainly their best, 1984 is the hands down epitome of 80s hard rock, and all 80s music in general.

1984 (Van Halen album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arguably, 1984 is Van Halen's most popular album, and their final album featuring singer David Lee Roth, who left the band later in the year over escalating tensions between him and guitarist Eddie Van Halen, as well as Roth's desire to pursue a solo career.
Additionally, 1984 was the first Van Halen album to be recorded at Eddie Van Halen's home studio, 5150, which lent its name to their follow-up effort, their first album with former Montrose vocalist/guitarist and solo artist Sammy Hagar.
One of Van Halen's most well known songs, "Panama" was used as the opening theme for the U.S. release of the 2005 videogame Gran Turismo 4.

Released on New Year's Day, 1984 rocketed to number two on the strength of the number one single "Jump." Like many songs on the album, "Jump" was driven by Eddie's new synthesizer, and while Roth was intially reluctant to use electronics, the expansion of the group's sound was widely praised.
Van Halen had recently undergone well-publicized treatment for alcoholism, and Hagar was notorious for his party-hearty ways, even writing a paean to Amsterdam's hash bars with "Amsterdam" on Balance.
Although the album debuted high on the charts, crashing in at number three, it quickly slipped down the charts, since the reception to the album from fans, critics and radio was mixed.

All of the melodies that Van Halen concocted after 1984 have been soiled by the uninteresting voices of Sammy and Gary, who incessantly degrade the incredible guitar-playing of Eddie Van Halen and ruin otherwise catchy melodies with their lame vocals.
Also on 1984 are the classics "Jump" and "Panama", which have good reason to be played often on the radio since they're two of Van Halen's finest pieces.
Van Halen fans certainly ought to purchase this release if they don't have it already, and those who like classic rock should enjoy this CD also.
