 Siemens: Canadian Literary Awards and Prizes, from The Encyclopedia of Literature in Canada
Launched by the Canadian Authors Association and administered by the CAA until 1971, the awards were at first non-monetary prizes; the prestige of the prizes was complemented by a small cash award of $250 in 1951, to be increased in 1966 to $2,500, in 1975 to $5,000, and in 1989 to $10,000.
Alden Nowlan Award (for excellence in English-language literary arts): 1999 Nancy Bauer; 1998 Robert gibbs; 1995 Fred cogswell; 1993 David Adams richards; 1991 Clara Kathleen (Kay) smith; 1984 Alfred G. bailey.
First awarded in 1976, and suspended as of 1995, this prize ($3,000 and a 4-week author's tour of the other country) is intended to familiarize the reading audience of each sponsoring country with the writers of the other.

 Oscar Emmanuel Peterson Biography
In 1984 Peterson was invested as a companion of the Order of Canada, an honor conferred by the governor general in recognition of outstanding achievement.
Peterson worked on a series of 15 albulms and won seven Grammy awards from 1974-1991.

Cohen's previous novel, "Elizabeth and After" (Knopf, 1999), won a Governor General's Award, but of all of his novels it is "The Spanish Doctor" (M and S, 1984), set in medieval Spain, that deals most identifiably with Jewish themes.
The awards committee also honored the memory of the late novelist Matt Cohen, whose posthumously published "Typing: A Life in 26 Keys" (Random House, 2000) won a prize for autobiography.
This year, in place of the usual fiction prize, the awards committee bestowed a first-novel prize to Toronto author Michael Kaufman for "The Possibility of Dreaming on a Night Without Stars" (Viking).
