Rail fare rises: a fast track to transport chaos - Comment - Times Online
Sir, Forty-odd years ago, Dr Beeching made the error of believing that, even if rail travel was made less accessible, people would still make the extra effort required to travel by train, which would have achieved economies of scale on a contracted network.
That flexible approach must still be the way forward for the railways (if they value their own future) when passenger numbers increase, even if it also means reinstating crossovers and sidings at terminuses to allow the engines to change ends.
New locomotives and carriages on busy routes are surely a better solution to this particular problem, rather than another short-sighted remedy which will make rail travel a preserve of the rich, or drive passengers away, and on to the roads, for good.

Industrial relations in the rail sector
Transport is one the most important elements in national infrastructures, in terms of both people's mobility and the economic system as a whole.
Since the early 1990s, the rail sector's structure has been undergoing remarkable changes, due to a process of liberalisation which is aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of rail transport.
First, the rail sector's lengthy incorporation in the state sector, usually as part of the public administration, often limited the room for collective bargaining, in favour of legislative regulation, and encouraged a tendency to centralisation, within a context of bureaucratic control.

Trains, Trams and underground systems [in: Preventing crime on transport]
The distribution varies: for example, in London the main crime in 1985 was theft from the person (Department of Transport 1986a); in Moscow and Tokyo vandalism and graffiti are rare (Wilson 1987); and in New York, where anti-graffiti programs have been successful, theft and assault continue to be a problem.
Design of station: Many rail systems are renovating their stations to create a brighter, less run-down appearance and to eliminate or reduce recesses and dead-end hallways that are conducive to assaults against passengers.
Rail staff believe that the high-tech system has reduced both assault and graffiti through their ability to see 98 per cent of the station, and constant monitoring by a station assistant (James 1990).

Networks of Modernity - Rail Transport and Modern Japanese Literature
And, by focusing on the establishment of rail transport in Japan—which originated in the West—it should become clear that it is not merely inadequate, but grossly misleading to think of Japan's modernity as “borrowed”.
It is clear that the planned, explicit use of rail transport by the authorities both in Japan proper and in occupied continental Asia abetted both nation building and the transformation of Japan into a modern, imperial nation.
Rail not only made travel to other cities a much likelier event for increasing numbers of rural and non-metropolitan Japanese, it also “created” connections to Tokyo (or Osaka) in the form of a transplanted son, brother, or sometimes female family members or friends, working in the capital.
