From The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Slam Poetry: “Slam poetry is the brainchild of Marc Smith (So What!) and the blue collar intellectual eccentrics who crammed into the Get Me High Lounge on Monday nights from November 1984 to September 1986 for a wide-open poetry experience.
In 1986 Smith approached Dave Jemilo, the owner of the Green Mill (a Chicago jazz club and former haunt of Al Capone), with a plan to host a weekly poetry cabaret on the club's slow Sunday nights.
In 1985 a construction worker and poet named Marc Smith (slampapi) started a poetry reading series at a Chicago jazz club, the Get Me High Lounge, looking for a way to breathe life into the open mike poetry format.

Slam poetry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Beginning in the mid-90s, slam poetry has been more and more closely associated with the vocal delivery style found in hip-hop music, to the point that currently (2005) it is almost unheard-of for the winner of a slam to not use said style.
Both realms have certainly influenced each others thinking, as slam poetry is peppered with the thought and theories of those distributed by the academy, and fields such as performance studies have devoted much critical attention to the competition of spoken word.
Critics of slam poetry say that it is the quality of the performance that often wins the day, irrespective of the quality of the poetry.

CREW Welsh Writers Online: Tony Conran
While the discovery of Welsh poetry influenced his own early poetry published in Formal Poems (1960), it was as the translator of The Penguin Book of Welsh Verse (1967, extended and reissued as Welsh Verse, 1986), that he first became well known.
He began writing poetry as a student; the death of Dylan Thomas turned his attention to Anglo-Welsh writing and, in the same period, the discovery of Welsh poetry, especially the poets of the medieval period, in Gwyn Williams’s translations was ‘a revelation’.
In the brilliant world of Welsh medieval poetry he found a culture in which the poet was not an alienated, marginal figure, but at the community’s centre, giving voice to its values.
