A simulation game (also known as a game of status or mixed game) is a mixture of a game of skill, a game of chance and a game of strategy, which results in a simulation of a complex structure (like a stock exchange, or civilisation flux).
Video games are made by developers, who used to do this as individuals in the 80's (Bedroom Coders), but now are almost always a large team consisting of designers, graphic designers and other artists, programmers, sound designers, musicians, and other technicians.
Game may refer to either the virtual universe and all of its governing rules ("Nethack is a game"), or a particular instance of that game ("my game ended in yet another annoying death", "game over").

And the pack-in game with the NES, "Super Mario Brothers", moved the emphasis of video gaming from high scores to multi-level gaming (as well as "beating", or completing, a game with a definite ending) more or less for good.
1986 also debuted the last major (and non-portable, which aren't mentioned here) game system that many consider to be truly "classic", the Atari 7800.

My dad has two brothers who live in Taiwan and one of them had a Famicon at his house and needless to say, my brother and I were instantly hooked by the big jump between Smurf's single repeating stage and Super Mario Bros.' 8 worlds at 3 levels each, catchy tunes, and SIDE SCROLLING.

It had...a cathode ray tube display...Here was this display that could do all sorts of good things!  So we started talking about it, figuring what would be interesting displays.  We decided that probably you could make a two-Dimensional maneuvering sort of thing, and decided that naturally the obvious thing to do was spaceships.
Computer games continued to be developed in the institutional setting after Spacewar!'s conception.  Games like Hunt the Wumpus, Adventure, and Zork, however, moved away from the graphical display used in Spacewar!

But just one year may have been too little, too late for the first Sega game console.
