The Soviet Union brought a veteran-laden lineup to the 1987 Canada Cup and was eager to regain its championship form after losing the most recent world title to Sweden.
Canada was undefeated in the round-robin, but only had managed a 4-4 tie with Czechoslovakia to open the tournament and a 3-3 tie with the Soviets in the final game.
Canada faced the Czechs again in the semifinals and fell behind 2-0 after one period before rallying for a 5-3 victory.

In February of 1987 during the yearly festivities at the Quebec Winter Carnival, hockey organizers planned a two game exhibition in the same vein as the 1979 Challenge Cup.
Canada's new secret weapon wouldn't be Gretzky behind the net, but rather Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Mark Messier on the offence together with Ray Bourque and Paul Coffey holding up the rear.
Canada and the Soviets finished 1, 2 after they met in the last game of the round robin which ended in a 3-3 deadlock.

The 1987 Canada Cup was a Professional ice hockey world championships series in 1987.
The finals took place in Montreal on September 11, 1987 and Hamilton, Ontario on September 13, and September 15, 1987 and were won by Team Canada.
The rest is history as Gretzky, Lemieux and Larry Murphy would rush down the ice, with Gretzky skating on left wing, setting up Lemieux's point blank game-winner in the slot with 1:26 left in the game.

Canada Lynx, (Lynx canadensis): WILD CATS:
While the Canada lynx is probably a descendant of a Eurasian lynx ancestor which migrated into North America during one of the last two major glacial periods (Werdelin 1981, 1983b), the Breitenmosers (in prep.) argue convincingly that the two should be considered separate species, as they now show marked adaptive differences for prey capture.
Whereas the larger Eurasian lynx preys mainly on ungulates, the Canada lynx relies almost exclusively on snowshoe hares, and is uniquely adapted, both behaviorally and physiologically, to exploit a cyclic prey base.
Quinn and Parker (1987) do not believe that habitat alteration has had significant impact on lynx populations, although in the southern portions of its range optimal habitat for snowshoe hares is more patchily distributed (Wolff 1980, Sievert and Keith 1985).
