Hurricane Gilbert remains one of the deadliest, costliest, and most intense hurricanes on record.
Gilbert was born September 8, 1988 as the 12th tropical depression of the season near the Windward Islands.
It strengthened even more and became a major hurricane on September 10, which is also the climatological peak of the Atlantic hurricane season.

The extremely active 1995 Atlantic hurricane
The 1995 Atlantic hurricane season was a year of near-record hurricane activity with a total of 19 named storms (average is 9.3 for the base period 1950-1990) and 11 hurricanes (average is 5.8), which persisted for a total of 121 named storm days (average is 46.6) and 60 hurricane days (average is 23.9), respectively.
The precursor and concurrent environmental conditions during the 1995 hurricane season are described in sections 4 and 5, respectively.
Hurricane Luis was of particular interest during 1995 because of its long duration at IH status and its destructiveness in the Caribbean.

Climate Prediction Center - Expert Assessments: Atlantic Hurricane Outlook   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
An important measure of the total seasonal activity is NOAA’s Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) index, which accounts for the collective intensity and duration of Atlantic tropical storms and hurricanes during a given hurricane season.
For the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season the ACE index is expected to be in the range of 120%-190% of the median.
Hurricane seasons during 1995-2004 have averaged 13.6 tropical storms, 7.8 hurricanes, 3.8 major hurricanes, and with an average ACE index of 159% of the median.

2005 Atlantic Basin Hurricane Season Forecast   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The Atlantic Thermohaline Circulation, or ATC, is a density-driven circulation in the Atlantic Basin that undergoes cycles on decadal timescales.
The North Atlantic Oscillation, or NAO, is the fluctuation in 500 millibar heights in the northern Atlantic, primarily between western Europe, Iceland, and Greenland.
All four landfalls occurred from hurricanes that originated in the southwest Caribbean Sea in October, a region that is expected to be highly favorable this season due to the lack of an El Nino and a strong ATC.

This verified with Hurricane Isidore which had maximum sustained winds of 110 knots and Hurricane Lili which had maximum sustained winds of 125 knots.
The tropics continued to be active with Tropical Depression Thirteen close to being a storm and a vigorous tropical wave in the far Atlantic.
Meteorologists at the Center can make their hurricane outlook for the next ten years when the year of the sunspot minimum is determined.

 emse232
The Atlantic basin hurricane season spans the six-month period from June 1st to November 30th, with August through October being the peak period of the season.
The season, however, was not expected to be hyperactive, as was observed during the 1995, 1996, 1998, and 1999 seasons.
Hurricane Michelle29 October thru early NovemberMichelle formed from a broad area of low pressure in the southwestern Caribbean that gradually became better organized and developed into a tropical depression on the 29th along the east coast of Nicaragua.

When and Where Do Hurricanes Occur   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
A hurricane, which is a Caribbean Indian word for "evil spirit and big wind", is a large rotating system of oceanic tropical origin with sustained surface winds of at least 74 mph somewhere in the storm.
Hurricanes are generally a summer phenomenon, but the length of the hurricane season varies in each basin, as does the peak of activity (Table 2).
Unless a hurricane name is retired and replaced by a new name, the list is recycled every six years (i.e., the names used in 1999 will be used again in 2005, the names used in 2000 will be used again in 2006, etc).

Hurricane Joan - Enpsychlopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Hurricane Joan took a very unusual track for an Atlantic hurricane.
It formed east of the Windward Islands in October 1988, and then hugged the northern coast of South America for several days.
Relatively weak for most of its life, it was a tropical storm until it reached hurricane strength while off the coast of Colombia, and made landfall at Bluefields, Nicaragua.

Hermine thru Nicole (incl. Mitch) - The Caribbean Hurricane Page - The 1998 Season
It will weaken somewhat since it is very unusual for hurricanes to stay this strong for a very long time, but it will remain a very strong hurricane for the next couple of days.
Most models still show that Mitch will pass Jamaica at a safe distance (for hurricane force winds that is, they can still expect gusty weather) with a turn towards the west before it reaches the island (see a couple of model runs here).
No, it has the potential to become a very dangerous hurricane and it is just a little bit too close already (and still moving northward) for my taste, but it still seems likely that it bypasses Jamaica.
