Topic: 1989 Pacific typhoon season

Typhoon Gay (1989) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Typhoon Gay (1989 TY 32W) was the tropical cyclone which devastated southern Thailand on November 4, 1989, especially the province Chumphon.
The storm was unique in being the only tropical cyclone to hit Thailand with full typhoon wind speed, but its origin in the Gulf, its small size despite its high intensity, and the fact the storm was active in two different tropical cyclone basins also made it an unusual tropical storm.
On November 2 18:00 UTC the intensification increased, thus the storm reached typhoon wind speeds at around November 3 0:00 UTC.

In the U.S., the Central Pacific Hurricane Center is responsible for forecasting the western part of this area while the National Hurricane Center is responsible for the eastern part.
The most intense storm on record was Typhoon Tip in the northwestern Pacific Ocean in 1979, which had a minimum pressure of only 870 mbar and maximum sustained wind speeds of 190 mph (305 km/h).
Typhoon Nancy in 1961 had recorded wind speeds of 213 mph (343 km/h), but recent research indicates that wind speeds from the 1940s to the 1960s were gauged too high, and this is no longer considered the fastest storm on record.

TYPHOON SOUDELOR (TC-07W / TY 0306 / EGAY) 11 - 23 June --------------------------------------------- Soudelor: submitted by Micronesia, is the name of a legendary Pohnpei chieftain Egay: PAGASA name, is a Filipino female nickname A. Storm Origins ---------------- The summary for the eventful Typhoon Soudelor begins at 2100 UTC, 9 June.
The newly-upgraded typhoon was beginning to link up with the approaching longwave trough to the west, and this system was to drag Soudelor off on a north or northeasterly track which would take it towards the southern Japanese island chain.
The extratropical remnants of once-powerful Typhoon Soudelor turned eastward, crossing northern Japan, and were last referenced at 0000 UTC on 23 June as a weakening 25-kt LOW far to the east of Honshu.

The number of Atlantic basin hurricanes per season in recent years has ranged as high as 12 (as in 1969), 11 (as in 1950 and 1995), 10 (as in 1998), and as low as 2 (as in 1982) and 3 (as in 1997, 1994, 1987, 1983, 1972, 1962, 1957).
At the height of the 2000 season (in September), 50 mb QBO wind anomalies were westerly but were easterly at 30 mb, this increased the wind shear between the two levels.
Note that despite the inactive 1997 season, the annual average NS, H, IH, IHD and NTC during these six years was 146, 163, 239, 329, 331 and 214 percent of the NS, H, HD, IH, IHD, and NTC hurricane activity of the prior (1989-94) six-year period.

El Nino, a warming of equatorial eastern Pacific Ocean waters that can alter global weather patterns, was blamed for a variety of meteorological conditions in North America and Asia during 1997.
Drought conditions contributed to widespread fires in Indonesia, causing dangerous pollution levels over parts of the tropical western Pacific and Southeast Asia in the late summer and fall.
Typhoon Linda, the worst storm to hit Southeast Asia in nearly 100 years, struck the southern coast of Vietnam on November 3.

Hurricane Season   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Hurricanes happen in both the Atlantic Basin and Eastern Pacific Ocean, but the season is a little different in each place.
The Eastern Pacific Ocean usually has more tropical cyclones than the Atlantic Basin, but fewer of them strike land because there is less land to run into.
They are usually steered away from Mexico and Central America by the winds that blow from east to west in the tropics.

 Pacific ENSO Update - 2nd Quarter 1997 - Vol.3 No.2   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
In fact - low level equatorial Pacific winds and the Southern Oscillation Index itself have been suggestive of a developing warm episode during March, April, and May. For these reasons the consensus forecast among the three models which are in agreement is the scenario currently considered to be the most likely to occur.
Although the early and rapid warming of SSTs in the central and eastern tropical Pacific over the last three months was not anticipated, the falling SOI condition and recurrent westerly "wind bursts" along the equator in the western tropical Pacific further supports the likelihood that a warm event is already developing.
This surplus rainfall was primarily the result of Typhoon Isa, which passed south of Guam in April, and brought rainfall totals for the month in excess of 10 inches at each of the two stations.

Four sets were drafted that year, but initially the procedure followed the practice formerly used by JTWC in the Western Pacific, i.e., if the last storm in a given year were the "K" name, the first one the next year would be given the "L" name from the same set.
However, in 1965 the decision was made to recycle the lists annually and begin with "A" every year in the same manner as in the Atlantic.
In these cases, the original name is retained in warnings issued by the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu.

Thus a direct zonal circulation is driven in the equatorial plane with countervailing winds at the surface and in the upper troposphere, with concomitant rising and sinking branches on the appropriate sides of the ocean.
The normal Walker circulation in the Pacific consists of air rising over Indonesia, west winds in the upper troposphere, sinking air off the west coast of South America, and east winds near the surface.
In the Indian ocean the circulation cell proceeds in the opposite sense (to the normal Pacific Walker cell), with sinking air over cold waters off the Somali coast and a low-level acceleration from west to east along the equator in the lower atmosphere.
