Long before he was named the Official Historian of Major League Baseball in 1999 by Bud Selig, Jerome Holtzman was known nationwide as one of the keenest minds and sharpest contributors to the sport.
Baseball fans everywhere may think they know the specifics of their favorite stories, but think again.
In 1989 the Baseball Hall of Fame presented Holtzman the J.G. Taylor Spink Award given annually to the one baseball writer who has exhibited "meritorious contributions to baseball writing." In 1959, Holtzman invented the 'save' for relief pitchers and after he created a formula to create a 'save' it became an official statistic in 1966.

Sports: When Baseball Cards Were My Life
After risking some of my sub-par Phillies cards to the uncertainties of postal handling, and receiving the signed cards in mint condition, I decided to try my luck with my favorite player: Minnesota center-fielder, Kirby Puckett, who had just led his Twins to a World Series victory and was my favorite player.
Collecting baseball cards was a religious practice for my brother, Jason, and me. Our oldest brothers enjoyed pretentiously poking fun at our "useless hobby." After we recited the entire Phillies' line-up by heart, Matt asked if we knew who all the Apostles were; we shook our heads with embarrassment.
With my little world revolving around baseball cards, I joyously ran barefoot into the house one afternoon flaunting my 1989 Topp's autographed card of Kirby Puckett.
