By the end of the 1989-90 NHL season, Brett Hull had scored a franchise-record 72 goals and 113 points in 80 games and Oates had registered a franchise-best 79 assists with 102 points in 80 games.
As the 2004-05 NHL season was cancelled due to labor negotiations Hull and many of his aging Red Wings counterparts found themselves unrestricted free agents.
Hull played three seasons with Dallas, scoring 95 goals and 196 points in 218 games and though he crept close to his former 40-goal scoring ways in his final year with the Stars (39 goals in 79 games in 2000-01) it was apparent that a changing, more defensively-oriented league had ended his goal-scoring dominance.
