Unlike other regional games of this type (i.e., Pan-American Games, Asian Games, All-Africa Games) which usually attract second-tier athletes, the Commonwealth Games attracts the top athletes of member nations of the Commonwealth, thus making this competition world-class in the true sense of the word (second only to the Olympic Games).

As the first comprehensive history of "The Friendly Games" (as the Commonwealth Games are often known), Dheensaw's book fills a long-standing gap.
Dheensaw doesn't try to overlook the reality of doping and drug scandals; in fact, because his interest is in the human interest side of sport, he sees the flaws as well as the strengths of the competitors he profiles.
The Commonwealth Games is his most ambitious project to date, and, to compile background material, he undertook two research trips, conducted hundreds of interviews, and drew upon his own academic interest in the history of the British Empire.
