Irvine managed to hold off Finland's Mika Hakkinen in a McLaren-Mercedes in an enthralling duel over the last 10 laps to ensure that Schumacher, who won the Canadian Grand Prix three weeks ago, narrowed the gap in the overall standings on the Flying Finn to just six points with eight races to go.
Schumacher, winning his fifth French Grand Prix in six years, overtook Hakkinen, who had qualified in pole position.

On closer inspection though, this is no picture from a Grand Prix weekend (the dolly bird holding the lollipop gives that much away) as the picture is from the Jerez circuit which has not held a Grand Prix for years.
In their Chinese Grand Prix preview they inform us that Takuma Sato was penalised 10 grid places in Japan for shunting Michael Schumacher out of the Italian Grand Prix.
Grand Prix Diary checked the FIA’s sporting regulations and found nothing to forbid an invisible car, although General Safety Regulation 90, which says ‘Any driver intending to leave the track should signal his intention to do so clearly to other competitors and in good time’ could be the teams only stumbling block.

Johnny received several offers for 1990, but eventually chose to combine a testing contract with Lotus, with a racing programme in Japan, competing in the All Japan Sports Prototype Championship and the Japanese Formula 3000 Championship.
He replaced the injured Martin Donnelly at Lotus after Martin's career came to a premature end when he crashed heavily in practice for the 1990 Spanish Grand Prix.
Johnny stood in for Martin in Japan and Australia during the season's closing GPs, before going on to spend most of 1991 and all of the next three seasons at Lotus.
