		The awards are named after and funded by Whitbread plc, a leading British leisure company.
		The awards, launched in 1971, are given both for high literary merit but also for works that are enjoyable reading and whose aim is to convey the enjoyment of reading to the widest possible audience.
		The overall Whitbread book of the year is chosen by a judging panel that comprises five judges from the previous category round and four new ones.

		Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel: This annual award is based on a poll conducted by the magazine Locus, which was established in the early '70s specifically to provide recommendations and suggestions to Hugo Awards voters.
		The awards were established in 1918 by a group called the Society of Arts and Sciences as "a monument to O. Henry's genius." The idea originally, was to present two cash prizes to the best and second best stories, written by Americans and published in American magazines, at an annual awards dinner.
