World Series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The World Series is the championship series of Major League Baseball in the United States and Canada, the culmination of the sport's postseason each October.
The Series winner is determined through a best-of-seven playoff (except in 1903, 1919, 1920 and 1921 when the winner was determined through a best-of-nine playoff) and is awarded the World Series Trophy, as well as World Series rings.
These series were arranged by the individual teams, not by the leagues directly, the same as the 1880s World's Series matches had been.

Perhaps the drain of the American League Championship Series and the National League Championship Series, which were wildly competitive for the most part, exhausted the Fat Lady as she had a bit of laryngitis.
Certainly, the World Champion Red Sox deserve all of the accolades they are now receiving, and probably more so because of their 86-year drought between World Series Championships.
And both the 1989 and 1990 World Series were not well remembered, primarily due to their lack of competition.

While the 1992 World Series between the Braves and Toronto Blue Jays might have fallen just short of equaling the 1991 Series for sheer excitement, it was real close.
This time, the Series participants engaged in four one-run games out of the six -- and the decisive game was an 11-inning thrill-o-rama that for taut drama would be difficult to top.
Another pinch-hitter, Francisco Cabrera, tried to match his NL Championship Series heroics -- it was his two-run single that enabled the Braves to sew up the NL flag -- and he sent a scorching line drive to left field.

While Gibson had won 19, 20 and 21 games in the previous three years and was bound for even greater success in the next three seasons, 1967 was in many ways most representative of the man's will to win and his ability to turn that determination into success.
Forced to settle for 13 regular-season victories for the surprising Cardinals, who raced to a 10 1/2-game victory margin in the National League race, Gibson was ready to shoulder the load in the World Series against an even more upstart aggregation: The Boston Red Sox.
Gibson was 2-0 thus far in the Series, having allowed only one run and 11 hits in 18 innings; Lonborg also was 2-0, having given up one run and a mere four hits in 18 innings.
