		Many art groups form during the early 1980s, promoting experimentation and avant-garde forms from abroad; their potential will not be fully realized until after the end of martial law in 1987.
		Art historian Wang Hsiu-hsiung criticizes this generation of artists as old-fashioned and dominated by Japanese-style modernism in a paper (see bibliography) delivered at the symposium China, Modernity, Art (Zhongguo, xiandai, meishu), held in conjunction with the exhibition; his lecture generates furious debate in the audience.
		Major exhibitions are held in conjunction with the symposium at the Museum of Art, the Arts Centre, Fung Ping Shan Museum at the University of Hong Kong, and the Art Gallery of Chinese University.

		Two FBI agents investigating a bold 1990 art theft in Boston went to Paris to investigate whether a former French media mogul embroiled in a financial scandal knows the whereabouts of some of the stolen art, the Boston Herald reported Friday.
		The art expert was present for six hours Tuesday when FBI agents and a French prosecutor discussed whether Messier might have acquired paintings stolen from Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum while he built his personal art collection in the 1990s, the Herald said.
		The art expert said he told French officials he believes some of the most prominent Gardner works, among them a Vermeer and three Rembrandts, were shipped to Paris by way of Genoa, Italy in the 1990s.
