He won an Eric Gregory Award in 1990 and first prize, for his poem "A Private Bottling", in the Arvon Foundation International Poetry Prize in 1993.
Don Paterson has since won all the major poetry prizes including, in the past few days, the poetry category of this year's Whitbread awards for his new collection Landing Light (Faber, £12.99).

 Seamus Heaney Library Sources
Seamus Heaney’s verse translation of the Anglo-Saxon epic won Great Britain’s Whitbread Award for both Poetry and Book of the Year, and became a best-seller in Great Britain and the United States some 1200 years after its original composition.
Spanning thirty years of writing, this volume includes poems from Death of a Naturalist (1966) through Spirit Level (1996) and collections in between, including translations of Dante and early Irish poetry.
The Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Seamus Heaney in 1995.

American biblical and literary scholar; some of his more important works include The Idea of Biblical Poetry: Parallelism and Its History (1981, 1998); In Potiphar's House: The Interpretive Life of Biblical Texts (1990), and Traditions of the Bible: A Guide to the Bible as It Was at the Start of the Common Era (1998).
In biblical studies he is probably most famous for his Book of J (1990), in which he discusses the so-called “J” (Yahwistic) source of the Pentateuch, whom he (re)constructs as a female genius.
German biblical scholar; compared biblical texts to other writings of the Ancient Near East and was an early practitioner of what has come to be known as biblical criticism.

Tom Leonard (right) is one of Scotland's leading poets and essayists whose work repeatedly addresses the politics of language and power in Britain and has ranged in form from pamphlet protests against military engagements to experiments in concrete and sound poetry.
He shared the Saltire Scottish Book of the Year Award in 1984 for his influential collection 'Intimate Voices', a breakthrough volume for poetry in Scots.
'Lanark' won the Saltire and David Niven Awards and is regarded as one of the most influential and important literary works of the 20th century.

The movement inward that tends to characterize this poetry thus can be understood in part as a desire to displace political issues into the analysis of the individual.
Felicia Hemans, for example, outsold every English Romantic poet except Byron, yet not even one of her poems was included in standard anthologies of Romantic literature until about 1990.
The typical structure of a Romantic poem the poet or the poetic imagination raises an issue, interrogates it, and offers some sort of answer: most of these poems consist of crisis and resolution.

I have loved this collection of poetry since the day I first encountered my grandmother's personally illustrated and calligraphy reproduced version (of the poems she loved best), as a child of about nine or ten.
She had been a Ziegfeld Follies dancer, and the passion and sadness of Laurence Hope's poetry inspired her interpretive style of performing.

 Mona Van Duyn To Deliver Final Lecture as Poet Laureate
Mona Van Duyn, the Library of Congress's sixth Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry and the first woman laureate, is the author of the poetry collection, Near Changes (1990), which earned her the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for poetry.
She succeeds six women who served as Consultants in Poetry before the title "Poet Laureate" was added to the chair in 1985.
Her term as Poet Laureate is notable for its reading series; in the 1992- 93 season, she paired talented younger poets and fiction writers with more well-known authors to bring these deserving young voices to the attention of a larger audience.

In 1970, Davitt founded an Irish poetry magazine called Innti that become synonymous with a new generation of writers committed to creating a modern poetic voice in Gaelic, a language that was overwhelmed by English in the 19th century.
He incorporated aspects of 1960s American Beat poetry into his work alongside his own mixture of melancholy and political irreverence.
He wrote a half-dozen collections of poetry from 1982 to 1990.
