Modern video games, a $12 billion industry in 2004, left the arcade behind with their realistic graphics and sound.
It may be for this reason that they are so likely to form warm little subcultures, or termite nests, within the larger society, complete with their own lingo, legends, heroes, magazines, newspapers and meetings of the clan.

Locus Online: Lucius Cook on Games
Science fiction in electronic games is nothing new; many of the arcade games of the medium's "Golden Age" (1977-84), such as Space Invaders, Asteroids, Defender, and Missile Command, utilize familiar scenarios such as alien invasions or global thermonuclear war as a backdrop.
The storyline, such as it was, involved a Marine fighting zombies and demons in a base on Mars; by the end of the game, the battle shifted to Hell itself, visualized as Giger-ish pulsating fleshscapes and lava flows.
Computer games had arrived at last, but in the process had lost their genre roots; Doom's forebears weren't Smith or Tolkien, but Aliens and Evil Dead, and the games that followed in its wake, like Duke Nukem, Quake, and Unreal, were less concerned with storytelling than arresting visuals.

A Brief History of Handheld Video Games - Engadget   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Handheld video gaming has always been a few steps behind its console counterpart, but that’s proven to be a small trade-off for the benefits of portability and, to some, even part of the appeal.
The system had only a handful of games and was plagued with problems from the start, including a 16x16 pixel LCD screen that was prone to rotting and cartridges that could be permantly damaged by even a relatively small static charge.
The Game Gear benefited from Sega’s advantage over Atari and NEC (the Genesis was then the leading console system) and a better selection of games, but it was still only a modest success in the face of Nintendo’s increasing dominance of the market.

Tanaka said that the game will actually use "virtual" 3D graphics so its maps can't be rotated around, but the camera can still be zoomed in to show details.

There were games written for PCs before Atari entered the scene, but they were generally written by amateurs (how many people could call themselves a professional computer game programmer in 1977?!) who produced adaptations of traditional games, which were regionally marketed and unprofessionally packaged.
The Intels and the Mac (which was positioned as a "serious" computer to differentiate it from the Apple II series) didn't become significant in the gaming world until the early 1990's, which actually signifies the end of the Golden Age.
This being said, one PET game in particular, Flash Attack, won a GOTCHA award for1980 and was the first game to be played over two networked PCs.

He used the proceeds from that tournament later that year to start Electronic Game Player, a "precursor" to EGM that closed after four issues due to a lack of interest from national distributors.
Although Game Informer has it soundly beaten in circulation, EGM is still among the most respected magazines in video games, and it still attracts the most advertisers of any magazine.

Even with the current obsession with cel-shading, many gamers were still surprised by Capcom’s decision to make a cel-shaded racer, as most racing games eschew cartoony graphics for a more realistic presentation.
Players can also alter their car’s appearance, making a vehicle unique to their personal style by designing a decal through the game’s decal editor, adding or removing spoilers, choosing rims, changing headlights, changing the paint job, and much more.
The cel-shaded graphics, though seminal, are beautifully executed and one of the most lauded aspects of the PS2 version, and that should translate easily to the Gamecube as well.
