At the start of the year, Williams were searching for their third straight drivers constructors double with the assistance of star driver Ayrton Senna and 34 year old Damon Hill.
A shaken Formula one world moved on to Monaco, where Schumacher took a convincing win, his fourth in a row.

Formula One, or Grand Prix racing is the best known single-seater auto racing class, which involves an annual world championship.
In 1950, a world championship Formula One was established for drivers.
The sport is lesser-known in the United States than either their mostly-domestic open-wheeler racing series (at the moment there are two major ones, IRL and CART) or NASCAR, but in terms of budgets and global TV audiences F1 is bigger than all three.

It was his 72nd start in Formula One when he finally emerged victorious, and he followed it up with a second straight victory at Kyalami[?] in South Africa.
He followed up 1985 with five wins in 1986, a season which is most known for his now famous tyre burst with 19 laps to go in the season finale in Australia, a race which Mansell, Alain Prost, and teammate Nelson Piquet were all capable of winning the world championship.
He did less well in 1994, and eventually returned to Formula One with Williams, where he replaced rookie David Coulthard for the French Grand Prix and the last three races of the season, winning the final one in Australia.

With the first race of the 1993 season scheduled for Kyalami, South Africa, Ron Dennis covered his bets and brought on Mika Hakkinen to be either teammate to Michael Andretti or test driver for McLaren, depending on Senna's decision.
To be sure, Senna's itchiness to jump ship in 1993 would certainly have solidified his receiving preferential treatment from Ron Dennis and the team; by contrast, Michael was a distant second, a kid with a famous last name and a Championship in that lesser open-wheel series Across The Pond but certainly no Senna.
