The level of a child's participation in sports, how he or she performs, or whether he or she enjoys playing is greatly influenced by adults' attitudes toward the physical and emotional aspects of the activity.
A 1993 Harris survey reported that the main reason women and minorities participated was to become more productive, better adjusted people and, many also said, to help them pay for their college education.
Another drawback to consider is that many sports, such as football, wrestling, and gymnastics, have rigid weight requirements that can often lead young athletes to manipulate their body weight with drugs and severe diets or eating binges.

A simplistic, yet useful definition is that amateur athletes participate in sports as an avocation while professional athletes are involved in sports as a vocation.
The concept of amateur sports includes a range of activities from an individual casual weekend athlete to high school athletics to extensively organized intercollegiate or international competitions.
Colleges and universities which receive federal aid are also subject to Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 ("Title IX") and must not discriminate on the basis of sex in their athletic programs.

05/27/1993 - Exposure of trainers and team physicians to body fluids.
This is in response to your letter of December 30, 1992, in which you made proposals regarding the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulation 29 CFR 1910.1030, "Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens." Specifically, your proposals pertained to the sporting arena, both at the amateur and professional level.
These proposals include requiring that every player who is noted to have a wound of any sort be immediately removed from the game by appropriately protected trainers and team physicians, and that the player not be allowed to return to the game until an occlusive dressing has been applied to the abrasion or wound.
Because there is no employer-employee relationship at the amateur level of sports, OSHA has no jurisdiction over the manner in which player safety and health is achieved.
