NFL scouts always like to say receivers in the draft are a dime a dozen.
The 2004 NFL Draft is shaping up as one of the deepest receiver drafts in a long time -- maybe ever -- and scouts are saying this receiving group could be 25 deep.
Among them are: Michael Westbrook (fourth to the Redskins in 1994), Ike Hilliard (seventh to the Giants in 1997); Peter Warrick (fourth to the Bengals in 2000); and David Terrell (eighth to the Bears in 2001).

We thought we'd look at past NFL drafts looking to see what each team needed, who they took in the first round and in hindsight, who should've gone based on how their pro careers turned out (forgetting about proper coaching and other circumstances.)
If we could draft knowing what we know now and not taking future drafts into account, this is how we'd have drafted.

Aside from Alex Smith, who has not yet had an opportunity, the only number one picks in the NFL draft never to get into a game were Jay Berwanger (1936, Eagles, University of Chicago), the first player ever drafted, and Ernie Davis (1963, Redskins, Syracuse).
Berwanger was drafted by the Eagles and traded to the Bears.
The Raiders drafted him in 1987 and Jackson continued playing baseball during the summer, joining the Raiders only after the baseball season was over.

On the other side, I'm disappointed we didn't have a couple of guys drafted higher because I certainly felt they would have been.
