NFL Draft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The NFL draft is an annual event in which National Football League franchises take turns selecting amateur football players and other first-time eligible players.
The draft is the first chance each team gets at players who have been out of high school for at least three years.
Over the years, scouting for the draft has grown to be a complicated pseudo-science, in which teams use workout data from prospects, interviews, game films, and projections of skills as players mature to decide which college players are the best in the country.

The NFL draft began back in 1936 at the Ritz-Carlton in Philadelphia and the first player ever drafted was Jay Berwanger who was also the first ever Heisman Trophy winner.
A total of 1,276 players were drafted the past five years and 300 were on the roster of the team that drafted them and had started at some point in the season.
The team that has had the most success in the draft is the Indianapolis Colts as 15 of their 37 selections the past five seasons have become starters as some point in the season; that’s the highest percentage of all 32 teams.

 The NFL Draft
The hype surrounding the NFL draft each year usually focuses on the glamour position -- quarterback -- and this year is no exception.
Unlike basketball, few top draft choices turn in to overnight sensations and get picks for collectors; the sophistication of pro football almost dictates that a player be in the league for several years before he reaches the kind of stardom that makes collectors take a serious look at the player.
He lasted until the sixth round of the 1995 draft and now is on the verge of superstardom with the defending world champion Denver Broncos.

I love the NFL draft for the fun of watching the college players realize their dream to hit the big time, the instant betterment of the teams and most of all, the second guessing.
Here's a look at past NFL drafts looking to see what each team needed, who they took in the first round and in hindsight, who should've gone based on how their pro careers turned out (forgetting about proper coaching and other circumstances).
There were 32 picks in the first round of the 1995 draft with the new entries of Jacksonville and Carolina.

The training camp availability of offensive tackle Tony Boselli, the initial veteran selected by the Houston Texans in the expansion draft three months ago, became uncertain on Monday when the seven-year pro underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove debris and scar tissue from his left shoulder.
The procedure is the second on the shoulder since early November for Boselli, a former Jacksonville Jaguars star, and the player expected to be the cornerstone of what figures to be a very good offensive line.
Boselli was the first draft choice of the Jaguars, and the second player chosen overall in the 1995 draft.

There's further incentive for trading down: While this year's draft is regarded as deep, with the best value in perhaps the second and third rounds, it's considered relatively weak at the top.
"The history of drafting quarterbacks in the first round is a 30 percent hit," the rookie head coach said.
The Dolphins finished next-to-last in the league in rushing last year, and even if 2002 NFL rushing champion Ricky Williams decides to end his retirement, he'll likely be traded rather than rejoin Miami.

SignOnSanDiego.com > San Diego Chargers -- Bucs struck gold on Sapp, Brooks with 12/28 parlay
After the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had finished their work on the first day of the 1995 NFL draft, the two men who engineered a series of remarkable moves a few hours earlier dragged a VCR outside their offices at team headquarters.
Those selections stand, without a doubt, as the best 12-28 combo any team has procured in the NFL draft, an easy call because the Buccaneers are the only team to draft at those positions on the same day.
The reality is, while Jonathan Vilma (the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year) and Chris Gamble were outstanding rookie contributors for their teams after being selected 12th and 28th last year, the two picks do not guarantee a game-changing player will be selected.

He is an outstanding college football player that will have to make some adjustments when he moves to the NFL, in terms of position and responsibilities.
He has been mostly an "up field player" in Nebraska’s defense, and while it would seem natural that he would fit on the NFL level as a 3-4 type rush OLB, he actually has a frame that is more like a 4-3 type DE, although he is a little light..
If he is used properly on the NFL level, he will contribute in a variety of roles, such as special teams, outside pass rusher, and he will bring an intensity and toughness to a defense that coaches will love.
