FIFA World Player of the Year - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The FIFA World Player of the Year is a football award given annually to the male and female player who is thought to be the best in the world, based on votes by coaches and captains of international teams.
He won it again in 1997 and along with Ronaldinho is the only male player to have won twice in a row (Mia Hamm and Birgit Prinz have both achieved this feat in the women's section).
Although players from several nationalities, of three continents, have been nominated and won the award, they were all playing for European clubs at the time of their nomination or victory.

Fifa World Player Of The Year - [Sunday Herald]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Real Madrid have two players in the final three for the award Ð Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane, who are in contention with Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, but the mind boggles at how Fifa's powerbrokers decided to host the ceremony in the Spanish capital, on the very date of Real Madrid's centenary.
Unlike the episode two years ago, when an all-time poll was rigged to reward both Pele and Diego Maradona, the World Player does at least carry some legitimacy.
In the 11 years that the competition has been running, still no goalkeeper has won the Fifa World Player of the Year, and it seems unlikely in the extreme that Kahn is about to reverse that trend on Wednesday.
