After the Marlins finished last in their division in 1994 and fourth in 1995, Lachemann was replaced as manager midway through the 1996 season with the Marlins' director of player development, John Boles.
Additionally, Guillermo Mota, who was acquired by Florida in 2004 along with Paul Lo Duca and Juan Encarnacion and was expected to be their closer, turned out inconsistent, and the Marlins gave the closer job to veteran Todd Jones, whom they signed in the offseason.
The underdog Florida Marlins went on to face the Cleveland Indians in the 1997 World Series and won in 7 games, with an amazing extra-inning single by shortstop Edgar Rentería off of Cleveland pitcher Charles Nagy, which barely cleared his glove, scoring Craig Counsell to win the game.

Marlins Designate Al Leiter for Assignment
Leiter agreed to an $8 million, one-year contract with Florida in the offseason, but never regained the form that saw him win 27 games and a World Series ring with the Marlins in 1996 and 1997.
Leiter threw Florida's first no-hitter in 1996, and was traded to the Mets during the Marlins' payroll purge following the 1997 World Series season.
Leiter was designated for assignment Thursday by Florida, perhaps signaling the end of a 19-year career for the left-hander who helped the Marlins and Toronto Blue Jays win World Series titles.

Pavano, who turns 29 next month, went 18-8 for the Florida Marlins last season after dominating the Yankees in Game 4 of the 2003 World Series.
Carl Pavano was 18-8 with a 3.00 E.R.A. for Florida last season.
Signing Pavano would be a coup for the Yankees, although some people in baseball questioned whether a pitcher with a 57-58 career record was worth almost $10 million a season.

 ESPN.com: MLB - June 2001 Archives
First off, all three of the success stories are currently pitching for the Florida Marlins, and obviously they're a big reason that the Marlins themselves are a success story this season (Grilli's a Marlin, too, but has yet to pitch well in the majors).
Wade Miller's not a little guy -- he's listed at 6-2, which might or might not be inflated by an inch or two, as is the fashion -- but he too was a 20th-round pick (in 1996).
I examined these lists from 1996 through 2000, and typed the names of everyone who made the top 50 on both lists into an Excel file, figuring that if both sources consider them great prospects, then they probably were.

Florida Marlins -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article
A series of rain-outs in September (due to hurricanes in Florida), the delayed doubleheaders that followed, and losing three key players from the Marlins' previous championship year (Rodríguez, Lee and Urbina) factored in the team's downfall during the season's stretch run.
Despite problems in the dugout and on the field, the Marlins had some bright spots on the mound and behind the plate in 1996.
The team's 3.95 (A major division of geological time; an era is usually divided into two or more periods) ERA ranked third in the NL, led by newcomer Kevin Brown, who finished the season with a 17-11 win-loss record and an impressive 1.89 ERA.

With the book closed on Montreal after the 1996 season, Manuel moved on to the Florida Marlins as a bench coach in 1997, the same year the Marlins won the World Series.
JERRY Manuel is the kind of guy who has "humble" written all over him--he doesn't particularly care for the spotlight; he doesn't see himself as a celebrity; and he would rather talk about practically anything other than himself.
This past winter, for example, Manuel showed up unannounced at a high school basketball game (for no other reason than just to be there) to the amazement of those in attendance, who were surprised that he would take the time to come to their neighborhood to rub shoulders with them.
