He was drafted by San Jose as their second pick, 28th overall, in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft and turned professional in the 1994-95 season upon completion of his four-year junior career with Ottawa of the Ontario Hockey League.

We went into the 1996 NHL Entry Draft in St. Louis having no idea how well or poorly we would fare in terms of autographs.
With tickets to the draft already ordered, we proceeded to assemble two cards of each person we felt might be at the draft.
By about 6:30, the draft was winding down, and most of the players being selected were not even present at the draft.

 UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE (11/03/96)
Led by the Stanley Cup Champion Colorado Avalanche's drafting of Ukrainian defenseman Peter Ratchuk with their 25th selection of the first round, preliminary research reveals at least 10 known Ukes were chosen in this year's National Hockey League entry draft.
Seven of the 10 were drafted out of the junior hockey ranks in the Western Hockey League, two from the Ontario junior league and Ratchuk was drafted by Colorado straight out of high school.
Below is a listing of the 10 drafted Ukrainians complete with their final statistics for their completed 1995-1996 season, in order of entry draft selection.
